Playing In The Shadows

This profound and extraordinary film about Midnight Basketball premiered at the Sydney Film Festival, attended by the youth stars of the film who appeared on stage after the screening for a warmly recieved Q&A with the entire audience of the State Theatre. Subsequently appeared on ABC TV. It follows a group of players from Midnight Basketball after the tournament in Woolloomooloo in Sydney. Produced by Marco Ianniello and Sascha Ettinger Epstein, capturing beautifully the spirit of the community and participants.

For groups of teenagers across the country, Midnight Basketball is the ideal way to start their weekend. On a Friday night around 60 teenagers have gathered at the Emerton Leisure Centre in Mount Druitt in Sydney's far west for a game, a meal and a change to learn something new.

The program which runs on Saturday night aims to get youth off the streets and involved in sport and life skills workshops. It recently started up in Alice Springs and those taking part say it's already having an impact.

Midnight Basketball players were selected for this exciting trip on the basis of successfully attending all team training sessions, school and out of trouble.

They were also received at the Australian High Commission and laid a wreath in memory of the fallen Indigenous and non-Indigenous soldiers at the Kranji War Memorial and Cemetery. It was a trip they will all remember for the rest of their lives.

Nathan Bracken traded cricket for a new challenge: running the Midnight Basketball Marrickville Grand Final night, including organising dinner for 60 teenage participants and supporters, running the nightly workshop explaining how he has dealt with life, challenges and success, coaching one of the teams for the night and organising the bus trips home for the participants. Nathan also kitted up to play with his team in a feature game with the local police.
